Jim Drury was working the Indian Ridge lookout in 1938 when a lightning storm rolled in. The lookout was struck by lightning, which was witnessed by nearby lookouts who feared Drury had been outside at the time disconnecting the phone. Drury was in fact okay, but the telephone’s fuses and wiring were burned. He finally repaired the phone at 4:30 a.m. and called to let everyone know he was okay. Pictured in 2015 is the current tower on Indian Ridge, which is now available for rent.

The Fuji Mountain cupola lookout was built in 1928. Patti Luse (left) remembers annual family camping trips at Gold Lake in the 1950s when the whole family would hike up to Fuji Mountain. Luse enjoyed these excursions since it meant getting to visit Larry Aldrich (right), the cute college boy stationed there. An R-6 cabin was built in 1959, but when it ceased to be used, the Forest Service burned it down in 1968. (Patti Luse.)
